Italian Expressions with "Volere"

  • volere bene (a qualcuno) = to love / care for (someone)
    • Francesco ti vuole bene! — Francesco loves you / cares for you!
  • voler dire = to mean
    • La parola “bicchiere” vuol dire “glass” in inglese. — The word “bicchiere” means “glass” in English.
  • volerci = to need / take time
    • Ci vuole mezz’ora per finirlo. — It takes half an hour to finish it.
    • Per fare questa ricetta, ci vogliono molte mele!  —  Lots of apples are needed to make this recipe!
  • volersela = to be “asking for it”
    •  Ho finalmente preso le chiavi della macchina da mio figlio, ma se l’è voluta! — I finally took the car keys from my son, but he was asking for it!

Polite requests with "Volere"

When you use VOLERE in the present conditional tense, it becomes a polite way of asking for something. 

  • Vorrei…  =  I would like…
  • Vorremmo  =  We would like…

Italian Idioms with the verb "Volere"

  • Volere è potere (literally: to want is power)  =  Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
